Samuel Wilson

Samuel Wilson (September 13, 1766 – July 31, 1854) was a meat-packer from Troy, New York whose name is purportedly the source of the personification of the United States known as "Uncle Sam".

Biography and legacy

Samuel was born in the historic town of Arlington, Massachusetts (known as Menotomy at the time, township of West Cambridge), to parents Edward and Lucy Wilson. Samuel Wilson is a descendant of one of the oldest families of Boston, Massachusetts. Through direct heritance of his grandfather, Robert Wilson, originally from Greenock, Scotland, he was Scottish with a Massachusetts background. As a boy, he moved with his family to Mason, New Hampshire. In 1789, at the age of 22, Samuel and his older brother Ebeneezer, age 27, relocated, by foot, to Troy, New York. The Wilson brothers were amongst the first pioneer settlers of the community. Troy, New York was attractive to earlier settlers for its proximity to the Hudson River. Samuel and his brother Ebeneezer partnered together and built several successful businesses. Both were employees of the city as well as successful entrepreneurs. Samuel was invested in the community. He was rumored to already have had the nickname Uncle Sam because he was friendly and so well liked.

Samuel Wilson (footballer)

Samuel Israel Wilson Rostrán (born on April 9, 1983) is a Nicaraguan footballer who plays for Real Estelí in the Primera División de Nicaragua.

Club career

Samuel Wilson was born in Chinandega Nicaragua, he is an Afro-Nicaraguan. He started his career at local team Chinandega and played for Walter Ferretti and Scorpión and had a short spell abroad with Atlético Olanchano in the Liga Nacional de Fútbol de Honduras. He has been with Estelí since the 2006–07 season.

On 12 January 2014, Wilson scored his 100th goal in a league game against his first club, Chinandega.

International career

Wilson made his debut for Nicaragua in a May 2001 UNCAF Nations Cup match against El Salvador and has, as of December 2013, earned a total of 29 caps, scoring 4 goals. He has represented his country in 6 FIFA World Cup qualification matches and played at the 2001,2007,2009,2011 and 2013 UNCAF Nations Cups as well as at the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

He scored a brace as Nicaragua defeated Guatemala to take fifth place in the UNCAF Nations Cup 2009.

Page 44 are an indie rock band formed in Birmingham, England in 2004. They have played on national TV, namely Channel 4's Popworld, where they were interviewed by Alex Zane as well as performing live to over half a million viewers. They made their appearance on the show because the show's viewers voted their song "The Grey Room" as their favorite at the time. They have opened for bands such as Boy Kill Boy, Captain Phoenix, The Standards, & The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. BBC said the band might become "tomorrow's superstars".

Awards and accomplishments

In 2006, they came in 2nd out of 1,000 bands in the national Emergenza live band competition. In 2007, the band was crowned the best unsigned band in the Midlands. The band won the title of Carling Supports Champions for Birmingham again in October 2007. In 2006, they were crowned Champions of the Midlands Emergenza Live Band competition and went on to finish second in the Emergenza UK National Final. The competition, which was judged by Sony, Universal, Interscope, and NME, took place in London.

Samuel Wilson (Portsmouth MP)

Sir Samuel Wilson (7 February 1832 – 11 June 1895) was an Irish-born Australian pastoralist and politician, and later a British Member of Parliament.

Wilson was born in Ballycloughan, County Antrim, Ireland, in 1832. He was educated at Ballymena and at first intended taking up civil engineering. For three years he worked for a brother-in-law [Robert Chesney], a linen manufacturer, but in 1852 decided to emigrate to Australia. He arrived in Melbourne in May 1852 and worked on the goldfields, but a few months later decided to join two brothers who had preceded him to Australia, and had a pastoral property in the Wimmera. He was made manager of one of their holdings, and selling a small property he had in Ireland, with his brothers bought Longerenong station for £40,000. He dug waterholes and made dams on the property which much improved and increased its carrying capacity.

Yanko station in the Riverina was then purchased and much improved. In 1869 Wilson bought his brothers' interests in their stations, afterwards bought other stations in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, and became very wealthy. He was interested in the Acclimatization Society of Victoria and in 1873 wrote pamphlets on the angora goat, and on the ostrich. In 1878 a paper he had written was expanded into a volume, The Californian Salmon With an Account of its Introduction into Victoria, and published in the same year. In 1879 another edition of this was published in London under the title, Salmon at the Antipodes.

Samuel Wilson (ice hockey)

Samuel Wilson (born 26 April 1985) is an Australian ice hockey player currently playing for the Perth Thunder in the Australian Ice Hockey League.

Playing career

Wilson first played for the West Coast Flyers of the Western Australian Super League in 2001. He continued to play for the Flyers exclusively until 2012 where he signed on with the Perth Thunder of the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) for their debut season. During his first season in the AIHL Wilson played in all 24 games of the season and scored eight points including two goals and six assists.

Wilson was first called up to represent Australia in 2001, where he joined the national under-18 team to compete in the 2001 IIHF Asian Oceanic U18 Championship being held in Seoul, South Korea. Australia finished third while Wilson record two goals in his three games of the tournament. The following year Wilson was again selected to play for the national under-18 team at the 2002 IIHF Asian Oceanic U18 Championship in Auckland, New Zealand. Australia improved on their result from last year, finishing second behind China and Wilson recorded nine points in his five games of the tournament. In 2002 Wilson joined the national under-18 team for the last time to compete in the 2003 IIHF World U18 Championship Division III Group A tournament. Australia finished first while Wilson managed only one assist in his three games of the tournament. In 2013 Wilson was selected for the national senior team to compete in the 2013 IIHF World Championship Division II Group A tournament being held in Zagreb, Croatia. Australia finished the tournament in fourth place while Wilson recorded only a single assist in his five games.

Sammy Wilson

Samuel Wilson (born 4 April 1953) is a British politician from Northern Ireland who is a member of parliament (MP) for East Antrim. He served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Belfast East from 1998 until 2003 and for East Antrim from 2003 until 2015. He served as Lord Mayor of Belfast in 1986 – 1987 and again from June 2000 to June 2001. He was the first person from the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) to hold the office. He previously served as Minister of Finance and Personnel and Minister of the Environment in the Northern Ireland Executive.

Personal life

Wilson was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the son of Alexander Wilson, pastor of Bangor Elim Pentecostal Church. Both of his parents died of Alzheimers. He was educated at Methodist College Belfast, and then went on study Economics and Politics at both Queen's University, Belfast and Stranmillis Teaching College. Wilson's first job was a teaching post at Grosvenor Grammar School. He later became the Head of Economics at the school, and also served as Assistant Chief Examiner for A-level Economics for the CCEA exam board in Northern Ireland.

Samuel (/ˈsæm.juː.əl/;Hebrew: שְׁמוּאֵל, Modern Shmu'el, Tiberian Šəmûʼēl; Arabic: صموئيل Ṣamuil; Greek: Σαμουήλ Samouēl; Latin: Samvel; Strong's: Shemuwel), literally meaning "Name of God" in Hebrew, is a leader of ancient Israel in the Books of Samuel in the Hebrew Bible. He is also known as a prophet and is mentioned in the second chapter of the Qur'an, although not by name.

His status, as viewed by rabbinical literature, is that he was the last of the Hebrew Judges and the first of the major prophets who began to prophesy inside the Land of Israel. He was thus at the cusp between two eras. According to the text of the Books of Samuel, he also anointed the first two kings of the Kingdom of Israel: Saul and David.

Biblical account

Family

Samuel's mother was Hannah and his father was Elkanah. Elkanah lived at Rama-thaim in the district of Zuph. His genealogy is also found in a pedigree of the Kohathites (1 Chron. 6:3-15) and in that of Heman, his great-grandson (ib. vi. 18-22). According to the genealogical tables, Elkanah was a Levite - a fact otherwise not mentioned in the books of Samuel. The fact that Elkanah, a Levite, was denominated an Ephraimite is analogous to the designation of a Levite belonging to Judah (Judges 17:7, for example).
